
README File for LED Programming on the NE5500 Series
----------------------------------------------------

The initial Windows 95 release contained a .INF file for the
NE5500 Series which would turn all card LED lights on.
There are three ways to change these values.

Method 1
--------

1) From the File Manager menu, select Copy.
In From enter:
     A:\WIN95\NETAMD.INF
In To enter:
     C:\WIN95\INI\

Click OK.

2) If you have already inserted the NE5500 card, it has been added
to the Network Adapter list. It must be removed by:
Going to the Control Panel - System icon
Click on it, and then on the Device Manager folder.
The adapter line should contain the device
     AMD PCnet Family Ethernet Adapter
Highlight it and click on remove. 

Reboot when prompted.

The card will again be automatically installed by Windows 95.
The first two LEDs will be set to Link Status and Transmit/
Receive Activity, respectively.

Method 2
--------

1) Click on the Control Panel, Network icon.

2) Click on the adapter line.

3) In the folder, click on Advanced Settings.
The values for LED0, 1, and 3 may be set individually. Please
refer to the table below for valid LED settings.

4) After defining values for the LEDs, click on OK.

5) The system must be rebooted for the settings to take effect.
Follow appropriate shutdown procedures.
 

Method 3
--------

The LED values may be defined in one of the configuration files
for client services. Please refer to MANUAL.TXT included on
this disk for further information.


LED Values
----------
Please chose the device value carefully, as it is
programmed directly into the device register.
LED0, LED1, and LED3 are programmable.

00h  Indicates collision activity on the network
02h  Indicates PCNet is jabbering on the network
04h  Indicates promiscuous receive activity on the network
08h  Indicates the current receive polarity condition
10h  Indicates the transmit activity
20h  Indicates receive activity for this station
40h  Indicates the current link status
30h  Indicates the transmit and receive activity for this station
34h  Indicates the transmit and promiscuous receive activity


Note:
LED2 is not available for the NE5500.
